I always fall for advertising. The allure, the aesthetics, the fantasy. Even the smarmiest American Apparel crassly sexualized image. Terry Richardson's photographs bypass my empathetic brain. Beauty has power over me. I want that control back.

I recreate the illusion of seduction to regain my foothold. Through my own photography I hire models to recreate fashion images. Except my photographs are self-conscious. The act of sexual presentation is telegraphed and deadpan. The exhaustion of being looked at is evident on the women's faces. As photographs, the images would remain trapped in the realm of Richardson or Richard Prince's tongue-in-cheek painted photographs.

The images are meticulously hand drawn, transcending the mechanical form sense of the lens. Appropriating my own photography, the act of drawing adds the breath of humanity back into the lifeless clothing store window display. My handling of graphite and form adds tenderness and depth to the shallowness on display. Where fashion photography lays bare the commodity of desire, I reaffirm the humanity of desire through a barrage of cross-hatching.

A beautiful object captivates regardless of its intent, and sensual drawing has its own tenuous seductive power. Explosive splashes of color vandalize the illusion inherent in my depiction while drawing attention to the art object itself. Flattening while concurrently broadening the pictorial space. Much like the glare on a computer screen, the paint surface becomes a dam against the gravitational pull of allure. Further negating the exploitive power of the image while adding its own adolescent joy.

I'm just coming off a three month residency in Berlin, Germany, where I was able to actualize these thoughts into a vital body of work dealing with the complexity of desire and pictorial space. These pieces are the culmination of my exploration of illusion and obstruction. Please watch as I wrestle with the power beauty wields.
