Stacy Lynn Waddell: LVMH (or Lovely Views Make Holograms)
LVMH (or Lovely Views Make Holograms)
LVMH is the acronym synonymous with the multinational juggernaut that dominates the luxury market. Although this conglomerate does not include art production in its list of categories that includes Wine & Spirits, Fashion & Leather Goods, Perfumes & Cosmetics, Watches & Jewelry and Selective Retailing, the objects that I produce are also created to elicit visceral responses that stir desire. That desire, in turn, feeds the market. Beauty is a powerful device that both the luxury and art markets employ, but at variant degrees and to different ends. With LVMH (or Lovely Views Make Holograms), I am interested in how beauty functions both as a concept and as a visual aesthetic.
With a select installation of images and scenes, in combination with the aura of Ian Fleming’s 1964 classic Goldfinger, I will present a scenario that illustrates how attractiveness complicates vision, the mercurial nature of beauty, its reflexive relation with the abject and the resulting desire that ensues.
